The number was one hundred thousand dollars, which, in comparison with my fifteen thousand pound Barratt House in the UK seemed liked an enormous number, yet here in Canada it was an entry level townhouse in 1988.
Well, the Barratt house in the UK was the size of a potting shed at around 500 square feet, the Canadian townhouse, with two bedrooms, was around 1200 square feet.
Remax Dave picked us up at a car park in Whitby in his big cadillac, drove a few miles North and then a few miles East, all through dark country lanes with the pair of us peering into the night and then we arrived at the townhouse.
The elderly owners were in the unit and Remax Dave breezed past them as though they were already ghosts, we looked in, we looked up, we looked down. The man was selling a house, not making a house call.
Remax man must have done a good job, convincing the pair of us of the need to act fast, we did, and rushed to do the paperwork and bought the first thing we looked at.
Even though we had no deposit...
