Gullick Dobson

I was trying, without success, to progress my Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering but Wortley Conveyors had no interest in a day release for me to complete it.

It had become very important to me that I finished what I had started back in 1977 when I left the Ford Motor Company, an Ordinary National Certificate was a good qualification, but I knew that I should push for the HNC.

In 1979 I joined Gullick Dobson at Ince, near Wigan. They were a mining related company that manufactured powered roof supports for the coal industry and they took me on as a detail/design draughstman with the proviso that I could take my HNC at the nearby Wigan Mining and Technical College.

It was the most interesting work in a true drawing office, a place where I made a lot of good friends and experienced a vast amount of true life in my sheltered world.
